Following the signing of an agreement between the Governments of Ghana and China for a grant to facilitate the construction of a modern market at Aflao to boost trading activities, a stakeholder meeting was held on Wednesday, 5th November, 2025 to discuss some modalities in relation to the project.
The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Honourable Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa (MP) in his remarks highlighted Government’s commitment to the project and the expected economic impact on the country.
Present at the meeting were the Volta Regional Minister, Honourable James Gunu, the Acting Chief Director of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Her Excellency Khadija Iddrisu, Chiefs from the Aflao Traditional Area, the Ambassador and officials of the Embassy of China in Ghana.
The meeting concluded with a shared commitment among stakeholders to collaborate effectively for the timely completion of the project.
For the people of Aflao, the new market promises to bring a fresh wave of opportunity. With a modern space that can attract more traders and shoppers from both sides of the border, the town stands to enjoy a busier and more vibrant local economy. Small businesses may find it easier to grow, new ones may spring up, and the steady flow of visitors could help Aflao strengthen its reputation as a key trading hub in the region.
Beyond the business activity, the market is also expected to bring a renewed sense of community pride. A well-organized trading center can create a more welcoming environment for residents and travelers alike, encouraging safer and more comfortable interactions. As the project takes shape, many in Aflao look forward not just to improved trading conditions, but to the broader boost it could give to everyday life in the town.
